Ok so that was amazing when the cast improvised the play. But really holy bejesus Cait and I really need to knuckle down and actually write it so it makes sense. The time has come.
So we have taken a temporary sabbatical from rehearsals and we've packed a pencil and a tennis ball in a sock (which is a great way to get nots out of your back, Cait's also happens to be a genius and a masseuse) and a curry Cait made this morning and we're off to our little retreat of hibernated writing away from the Cellar theatre. So far we've whittled 40 scenes down to 14 and had many 'how are we so stupid that we didn't realise that there's no way X could be Y's father' type moments. I am constantly amazed by what we put ourselves through before we get to what we want. We seem compelled to make stories so complicated you'd vomit and then just slowly pick at them until they are a nice managable dry little scab. Or at least a wee bit less ridiculous - and given that the play will be ridiculous when you see it, you will have to dig into the recesses of your imagination to believe how silly it once was.
I'm not sure what tense I'm using now. I was interviewed today for a documentary Danika from our cast is making which was partially about me doing this show and maybe having an existential crisis. So I am fighting not to manifest one. |
