A few weeks ago Cait and I put a munch of people through an audition process which was fairly unusual. Or at least fairly long. In what may have been a slightly misguided idea, we decided to cast a clumsy net over every theatrical task we anticipated putting people through.
Singing, improvisation and improvised simultaneous sight singing and sight reading were among the relaxing activities we prepared for our muses. People were surprisingly good humoured and enthusiastic about this. Watching them pull it off again and again shocked us as much as it shocked them. In keeping with our 'if you do it, we'll do it too' egalitarian philosophy, we through ourselves into the audition. Eventually we pulled together a bunch of beautiful little toys to play with. About 14 including musicians. For the past two weeks we have been playing around, with some very talented, very good sports. I now know what it looks like when a man raised by wolves interacts with a little fish with an arm strapped to some sort of correctional machine. And let me tell you something, it looks amazing.
I also now know what it looks like when the little fish and the wolf boy and the rest of the little toys learn how to line dance with a line dancing world champion. Also amazing. I know what it looks like when a dog walks into a perfectly framed photo. Makes us an ideal production poster. So now we just have to get the fish and the wolf boy to teach that human machine how to line dance and we'll have a play. In the works. We also need to do a serious spell check of our script. And write the end.
